Philipp Bethge

SIV Instructor

My first passion was whitewater kayaking and canoe slalom. It’s where I understood the value of training and competition in the outdoors, the progress made through consistency, and the experiences shared among friends. I later had a stint in downhill mountain biking before I discovered paragliding. When I moved to Bordeaux for my graduate studies in neuroscience, I bought a motorcycle and an old glider and started learning to fly in the vol libre environment of the Dune de Pyla. I then moved to Switzerland, where I got a real brevet and soon after joined the Swiss League. Here, I really grew as a pilot, soon achieved my first successes, was able to join a few PWCs, and trained the Regio Ost of the Swiss League.

Since moving to Walenstadtberg, I have started helping X-dreamfly with takeoffs, camera work, driving the rescue boat and, eventually, became an SHV SIV instructor. Today, I fly recreationally with a focus on Hike & Fly and Acro when I am not on the water or snow chasing wind with kites and foils. I work full-time at the University of Zurich but enjoy teaching SIV on the weekends and sharing the knowledge and skills I have acquired throughout the years.
